Improv and writing news from Katy Schutte
Hi ,
Welcome!
If you’re new here: I’m a writer, improviser and theatre-maker. Heyo!
Improv classes are at the top of this newsletter and there’s some news further down the email. Do get in touch if you want to ask me anything.
I’ve been away from home on and off for the last five weeks or so. The pic above is from my hike of the West Highland Way. It was so beautiful (even if the midges bit my face a lot and it did rain sideways). The Robin Hood Festival was last week and it was an absolute dream to work with such inspiring artists. Now I’m back in London, starting new classes and working on lots of improv corporate training.
Improv Classes
The Improviser’s Way
12 weeks (online) STARTS TONIGHT!
I wrote an improv book about 5 years ago that was first made as a crowd-funding project, then it got published and put in all the bookshops and theatres by Nick Hern Books. It’s a 12 week course in longform improv to supplement your current practice no matter what level you’re at. It’s both a book club and an improv class.
Play Like Brené
6 weeks from 7th November (London)
This is an improv class inspired by the work of Brené Brown, exploring empathy, vulnerability and courage on stage.
Write Your Solo Show
8 sessions (fortnightly, online) from 15th November
I have run this course several times and many students have gone on to make and perform their shows at festivals worldwide. There are lots of writing tools, accountability and a supportive group.
Email me if you’d like to get the booking link as soon as it’s available. [email protected]
Truth in Song
Weekend workshop 3rd & 4th December (London)
This is a musical improv weekend intensive. New and experienced musical improvisers are welcome. You don’t need to be able to sing, but you do need at least a good grasp of scene work. We’ll work from your own stories to create original improvised songs.

News
I’m talking about The Arctic on The North Coast podcast!
Spot me in the latest History Bombs one-take!
Sideliners
Our web series Sideliners is still doing great at film festivals. Thanks for all your support! We’ve got more festival selections, are finalists in a couple and we just won Best Pilot at Apulia Web Fest in Italy! Ed is in Bath this weekend at the Jane Austen film festival, so fingers crossed for that one.
My screenplay Coming of (Middle) Age has also won another award: the WRPN.tv Screenwriting Competition Gold Medal. Whoop!
Pic by Amar Chundavadra (with supporting artists Sacha and Jen).
I’m excited to be teaching and performing at other festivals this year in Birmingham, Zürich and Winnipeg.
Hope to see you there!
Have an awesome day.
