Katy Schutte: Improv and Other News, October

Improv and writing news from Katy Schutte

Hi ,

Welcome!

If you’re new here: I’m a writer, improviser and theatre-maker.

If you’re interested in learning to improvise in VR, there is a very exciting announcement in this newsletter…

Update…

There’s been some more travel since the last newsletter, including an incredible R&D trip to Ireland to work with Jessamyn Fairfield, Orla McGovern and some brilliant scientists.

The Birmingham Improv Festival was also great! I was delighted to see Improbotics and Pixels and to run our new FANDCO VR and motion-capture show PlayTest which went swimmingly. Shout out to my hip hop crew Track 96 for a super fun show there too!

Improv Classes

Play Like Brené

6 weeks from 7th November (London)

This is an improv class inspired by the work of Brené Brown, exploring empathy, vulnerability and courage on stage.

There are two tickets left!

Write Your Solo Show SOLD OUT

8 sessions (fortnightly, online) from 15th November

I have run this course several times and many students have gone on to make and perform their shows at festivals worldwide. There are lots of writing tools, accountability and a supportive group.

There is a waiting list for places that become available and you’ll be the first to hear about new course dates.

BRAND NEW!

VR Improv Residential!

9th - 12th December (Devon)

Chris Mead and I are excited to announce that we’re running a VR Improv Residential in December! We're presenting it under the FANDCO banner that has produced all our VR work together - 13 Cycles, The Galaxicle Implosions & Play Test - and we'll be using custom software coded specifically for improv theatre by tech genius, Rob Armstrong. We’ll be sharing it on our socials next week, but members of our newsletters get 6 DAYS to secure a place before it goes out to the general public.

  • The event will run from the evening of Friday 9th December until the morning of Monday 12th December 2022.

  • You'll get the chance to do improv in virtual reality throughout the weekend - looking at tools like synchronous shared space, virtual avatars, manipulating digital props and exploring VR locations - all equipment will be provided.

  • Learn from Katy Schutte and Chris Mead, two of the most respected improv instructors in the UK, and industry leaders in the nexus of improv theatre and virtual reality. We'll be teaching classes on wider improv theory as well as giving you plenty of time in virtual worlds.

  • We'll be staying at the beautiful Ashley Court retreat in Devon.

  • The event will be fully catered with vegetarian and vegan seasonal meals, many taken directly from the gardens of Ashley Court.

We're keeping the group extremely small - somewhere between 8-10 people for the entire retreat. The whole weekend will cost £799 including meals and board. We are happy to offer payment plans in order to spread the cost of attending. If you'd like to know more or to book your place on the event, email [email protected] before we sell out (and mention you read about it here).

Since Chris’s newsletter went out yesterday, we have already sold a third of the tickets, so get in there!

Festivals

Improv Theater Festival (Zurich)

10th - 16th October

I’m thrilled to be back at this festival, especially as it’s a ‘best-of’ edition with participants invited from each year of its existence. There are different shows all week, all directed by the cast and overseen by Gilly Alfeo.

The Winnipeg Improv Festival

20th - 23rd October

It’s my first time in Canada and I couldn’t ask for a better team! I’m excited to meet and work with new improvisers and see some nature. If you’re local, come hang out.

Have an awesome day.
