Katy Schutte: Improv News June 2020
News from Katy Schutte
Hello again, it's Katy
Exciting Launch News!
Chris Mead
and I are launching a new improv community called
The Improv Place
. It's a home for professional and aspiring-professional improvisers both to train and to find community outside of all the Facebook bullshit. We'll never sell your data or ask you to pay to have your posts seen once you're in The Improv Place. You can connect with topics and people in locations that are relevant to you, we'll keep out the trolls and you can bring your own community in too.
We'll be running and hosting online classes, but
forever
, not just because COVID. This whole plan was hatched long before the pandemic. In a few weeks, we'll open our doors.
We'll be charging £250 for a six week course on improv teaching which includes a year of membership to the community (normally £100). There will be regular articles, polls, discussions, guests, and weekly office hours where you can come and speak to me and Chris live. Throughout your first year there will be loads more classes available at pro level (with curated teachers) and a huge community where you can give and get information to help you grow.
However, we don't want to be asshole gatekeepers, so if you are serious about improv, but you can't afford to join, please drop me an email at [email protected]. We're prioritising diversity from day one, so if your ethnicity, gender, sexuality, neurodiversity, physical ability or anything else has been a barrier to entry thus far, we welcome you. Get in touch.
Also I'm going to violate my one-email-a-month promise this month so that I can nudge you when we launch! Sorreeeee.
Also, I sold out a third Write Your Solo Show course in 24 hours and knitted another jumper. If I hadn't just broken my teapot, this would have been the perfect day.
In other news...
Sideliners Live Read
Ed and I are devastated that all our work to get our web series filmed has been put on hold. With social distancing, we are unable to film the first two episodes at the end of June as planned. We're making up for it by hosting rom-com Netflix Parties on Fridays at 3pm and streaming a lunch time live read from 29th June to 3rd July. If you'd like the links to either, pop me an email or keep an eye on my Facebook page /katyschutteimproviser.
Online Performing Class
I'm thrilled to continue teaching Online Performance classes for Hoopla. It's a great way of exploring Zoom as a performance medium with loads of imaginative and enthusiastic improvisers. Fred Deakin has been co-teaching, so we have his design/ideation brain and my improv nerdery to facilitate cool ideas. Our new class starts this Thursday night. Book here.
Above is last week's showcase with audience member Tim travelling through a dungeon of puzzle rooms with a sock as his guide.
Online Masterclass
I'm guest teaching Know Who You Are for Voodoo Comedy on Monday 15th June 7pm BST, 11am MT. It's an improv class about character.Come join »
My Longform Workbook
You have it. I know you do, but JUST IN CASE, The Improviser's Way: A Longform Workbook, is on sale at Nick Hern Books right now. Weirdly I can't put the link on here, so just use the Google. Boom. Thanks!
There are two recent episodes of the Destination podcast and we have a behind-the-scenes video of the last one being recorded. You can find it on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts, or play it (and the video) off the website with added blurb, images and special episodes.
